Rivington Street Rabbis Vow to Rebuild, Somehow

Friday, January 27, 2006, by Lockhart

2006_01_rivnightr.jpgThe roof caved in on the First-Roumanian American Congregation's synagogue Sunday afternoon. Then the rains came. But, The Villager reports, the rabbis plan to rebuild. Just how they'll do that remains unclear, though; insurance may not cover the collapse. A Department of Buildings spokesperson waxes philosophical: "The building is not at inevitable risk of collapse. But you can’t leave a building open to the elements too long. It's really up to them and their engineer what they decide to do."

Meantime, what did the collapse mean for neighbors at 123 Ludlow Street, a tenement adjoining the synagogue?

"I was getting my laundry and heard a rumble," [123 Ludlow tenant Ryan] Pearson recounted of the collapse... He and others took refuge at the bar of the new high-rise Hotel on Rivington a block away and were hoping they might be offered free rooms but were offered a rate, which he later realized was a premium, but which was still too steep for them.
Thanks, THOR! For more THOR fun, click through to the Villager story, featuring a photo of the collapsed roof clearly taken from the top of everyone's favorite new high-rise.

I have looked into my crystal ball and the rebuilding shall involve, let's see, a transfer of air rights from the "community building" to a developer for a high rise.

Anyone placing bets? I hope the synagogue is rebuilt quickly, God and the Department of Buildings willing.

I live right around here. On Wed I went by and there were some rabbis talking to what looked to be an engineering team. So hopefully they can fix this place up, never been inside but it looks beautiful from the outside.

i live at 123 ludlow i was taking a shower when it started collapsing than i watched the rest from my window, looks more like an insurance scam to me, i never once saw any lights on at this building and most of the windows were broken, my vote goes to the blue developers who will build a new condo unit which they will call red, thus transforming the lower east side into one giant dr. seuss world of fun!

It was dark because it was deemed unsafe by the city (which proved to be important). It has sufered from dwindeling congregation and therefore they could not afford to fix it up. There are much easier ways to scan an insurance company than having one of the main support beams fall in. Its just suffering from disrepair, I hope they fix it up, it could be a beautiful building. I'm lookign for some shots of the inside taht I have seen before, but it used to be spectacular.
