Development Du Jour: The Prime

With the searing heat of the Meatpacking District regularly burning the nostrils of all those who enter its realm seeking hedonistic weekend pleasures (and it's the heat that's burning their nostrils, right?), it's quite surprising that The Prime is the first boutique luxury development to open in the neighborhood. Developed by office dudes Shea Commercial and architected by Meridian Design, the glass-and-stone building at 333 West 14th Street has nine full-floor units, including garden and penthouse duplexes. These lofts are big (2,257 to 4,042sf), and they have prices to match: $3 million to $9.5 million, according to the Post. That may seem like a lot to pay for a unit in a building whose name is a pun, but this one is all about pure luxury, baby: private elevators with fingerprint recognition, balconies galore, floor-to-ceiling windows, Sub-Zero, Bosch, Viking ... all that jazz.

But about that name. Sure, "The Prime" evokes the Meatpacking District, but where's the beef? It's all in the past, dagnabbit. Shouldn't we suggest a tagline that captures the spirit of the MePa as it now stands? A contest similar to the Novare? Here's our Prime suggestion: Live Where Lohans Roam. Let's have your ideas in the comments.

14th Street between 8th and 9th? Since when was that the Meat Packing District? That is one unattractive block.

that is not the meatpacking district - that starts on the other side of 9th ave. Also - is it me or do these look like really boring condos. I like the floor to ceiling glass, but thats about it. My personal taste hates the design, especially for the price tag. What happened to desginers being innovative and creative?

Lizzie Grubman is referenced under "Credits" on the site. I guess the NYPost got the call from Grubman to plug this piece of crap "in the heart of the Meatpacking District"

I walked in front of this unit 3 weeks ago and stopped for a minute to take a look. To say the truth it reminded me a lot of the SOMA building that is being finished right now on 22nd btw 7th and 6th. Both are on not-so-prime blocks in Chelsea. On 14th they will have more light but more noise. Both are full floor condos and seems to be pretty nice as far as finishes. The main difference : SOMA (albeit smaller at an average of 1550 sqft) average price was $1.8 M. And it was sold in Dec 2004 with prices already pretty high. So I don't see how their 2250 sqft unit should be more than $2.6-2.7M at the most!! With the market in such a funk they will have problem getting those high prices. My 2c.
