Record Set for Downtown Single-Family Home?

Downtown must be feeling a little jealous. While Uptown doesn't even bat an eye at a $20 million sale, all the South gets is, like, Rupert. But don't cry for Below 14th just yet, because here's some splashy news! The Observer's Max Abelson reports that venture capitalist/blogger Fred Wilson has gone to contract on selling his 55-foot-wide 1847 townhouse at 11 West 10th Street. No word on the price, but it was listed through Sotheby's for a whopping $37.5 million. Yowza! Wilson bought the home from NYU's Law School in 2000, although we don't know for how much. NYU bought it in 1996 from the Ladies Christian Union for only $3.9 million. Wilson brought in architect David Piscuskas to completely redo the interior of the five-story house, adding an elevator and a giant playroom among other things, much to the chagrin of Elliman's Jan Hashey, who presided over the deal between the LCU and NYU: "Charm isn’t exactly the word. It’s not an old Village townhouse anymore." Call it what you want, but don't call it cheap.

It was originally two houses, combined.

Floor plan anyone?

I've met Fred, nice guy, knew he was doing quite well for himself, never would have guessed exactly how well.

That's *ridiculous*. Give me a chateau in France, any day. Seriously, what about that building merits that price?

I bet the floor plans are pretty nice inside. I'm a renter in a 24' wide brownstone and the freedom to arrange your apartment is limited due to the side hallway and stairway. I have been dreaming of combining two 18' wide townhouse for the perfect (for me) 35'-36' wide townhouse.

I can't find listing anywhere...was it ever on Sotheby's website?

I was in 10 West 10th befroe they made that record breaking sale and that was done so well, with such extensive and expensive detail, it was definitely worth the price, and this house across the street is twice the size, and probobly worth it.
