We have an answer as to how 55 Berry got tagged up. A resident writes:

I am a buyer in 55 Berry, your favorite whipping boy. Why you hate it so much is perhaps better suited for another conversation, but your inference that the tagging was an "inside job" approaches slander.

Here's what actually happened. The big construction site next door (for the building you seemed to laud) is not well protected. The fence can be easily jumped, and once inside, the tagger scaled the frame to access the second floor roof deck at 55 Berry. Unguarded construction sites causing crime at neighboring buildings, is actually a more interesting story...

There you have it.

"approahes slander" Kind of funny. In oversimplified terms, slander is spoken and libel is written. So now Curbed is calling up people at 55 Berry and talking to them?!?!

By Anonymous at March 12, 2007 1:08 PM

2.

So now Curbed is a legal discussion board? Make that discussion BORED.

By Anonymous at March 12, 2007 1:13 PM

3.

Slander? I think your story approaches treason. You guys didnt have the time to go out and inspect 55 berry to see how these tags got up there, therefore missing the real story...underguarded construction sites?

4.

every place you so lovingly use the word 'tagger', you should replace it with 'vandal'.

By me at March 12, 2007 1:45 PM

5.

Me, that would imply that they did something wrong? This poor "tagger" was merely trying to express his artistic discontment over 55 Berry's color palatte and price per square foot. He should be lionized, not demonized!

graffiti scares me! their was none in youngstown

By chad from youngstown at March 12, 2007 2:20 PM

10.

So pack your shit and go the fuck back to Youngstown! Or grow up, graffiti is a part of NYC and is always going to be!! They can't and won't stop graffiti and they should just leave it be and fight atual crimes with actual victims. I know some of you guys don't like to see writing scrawled all over the walls of your newly-gentrified (apparently not) neighborhood, but all I can say on behalf of all us graffiti writers is : FUCK YOU!!! Grin and bear it. Suckas!
The writing's on the wall and it stays there, or gets replaced by more graffiti!! hahahahah!!

Olde Skoole and Response 10: Classic example of how big a toilet this site really is.

The unguarded construction site concern is a valid one, btw. One of my friends left a W'burg loft after getting broken into THREE times in less than a month thanks to scaffolding right under his window that was an easy climb from the construction site next door.

Since the site was shielded from the street it was an invitation to crime, and numerous people in his building reported the same problems. When my friend called the police they said they had been out there several times.

With the growing volume of construction in this town it's really something to think about - if people can get on the roof, breaking into the building probably won't be that difficult, since they can take as much time as they like to tamper with any access doors on the roof. If you're in this position definitely have an alarm installed in all roof access doors!

The more crime in the WB the less demand for crappy condos. Get renters insurance and live it up!

By a3ulafia at March 12, 2007 3:19 PM

15.

only a douche from 55 Berry would write that.

By Anonymous at March 12, 2007 3:57 PM

16.

Yeah, my friend got evicted from another 'burg building that was sold to developers right after he lost his job, so he took a risk and didn't get renter's insurance after he moved and it was not so cool.

I'll give the building owners credit, they did give him some money to cover the losses and had no problems with his breaking his lease. Since the construction site was also theirs they were totally at fault, but lots of people would have still been dicks anyway.

When did you move out? In the 1850s?

Jealousy is the root of all evil and when is 600 per ft overpriced? where are writing from alabama?

What is remarkable is that someone as ignorant as Olde Skoole actually reads sites like this. I assumed everyone on this site is at least 20 years old.

"Slander? I think your story approaches treason."

Probably a crime against humanity, in fact.

Don't bother reacting to Olde Skoole- he's probably a 50 something rent controlled loser living in a shithole tenament on the LES. He's rationalized his whole existence to prevent himself from facing the true horror of his life, along with his litany of " This is NYC, fuck you and shutup". If you posted something about a 12 year old getting sodomized in front of Macy's, he would use the same line.
