The Williamsburg Condo Fashion Statement

Tuesday, March 20, 2007, by Joey

There's been some amusing reaction to the Sunday Times story about parents who help their kids buy apartments, specifically to the tale of the young Tufts graduate who can thank her folks for her $900,000 Williamsburg penthouse (as long as she doesn't let her boyfriend or old couches move in). There's the comments on our It Happened... post, as well as this Gawker gem and its accompanying comments. But no one can top the sons and daughters of Williamsburg, of course, and a tipster sends along this photo of a shirt that's already for sale on Bedford and North 11th. Do you think they'll update the lecture material at Homebuying for Hipsters?

I never could figure why these newcomers seem so lame, obnoxious, self-entitled and lacking any cutting edge.

Ma & Da's generous help explains a lot.

The cheap shoddy construction in this billyburg trailer in the sky is probably an upgrade for these smelly fucking Indians and where they came from.

As if the poorer kids in Williamsburg aren't just as lame and obnoxious. I'd be thrilled if my parents wanted to buy me a 900k penthouse apartment.

Downtown Guy, how exactly does your presence provide a counterweight to all these newcomers? What exactly do you contribute?

I'd really just love to see some of these hipster-bashers step up and really describe how they live, where they shop and what they do that makes them so different from the rest of us.

My parents would never put money into such shoddy construction and fly-by-night development. They didn't get rich by being stupid!
Plus, they love me enough to buy for me in Manhattan.

michelle you are not cool enough for billyburg!

yeah, seriously. what parent wants to spend $900K in williamsburg? if i had a kid and that kind of cash, i'd force them to live somewhere more desirable, even if it meant giving up some space and the whole "penthouse" thing. she can get a penthouse for her 30th birthday. for now, a luxury one-bedroom will do just fine.

I would buy in Williamsburg in a second if i could. It is something called foresight.

Apart from age and a generational difference, I don't see that the newby's are all that different. I moved here in '85, and my Dad forked the bill on quite a number of things- including contributing to my rent.

Not only me, but many of my friends had parents who bought places for them to live. I think it's that cycle of "I was here first, therefor I am superior". You can see it in just about every age group - from 40 somethings on up to 70 somethings.

Thanks Bing, for adding a much needed statement- I agree wholeheartedly.

yes, that article made my vomit in my mouth, but the racist comments are way out of line. i think the girl and her parents are pathetic enough without insulting their nationality. assholes come in all colors.

its not racism, its the facts, nyc would be so much better if the fucking indians, blacks, jews, hispanics, asians, native americans, irish, muslims, catholics, and wasps didnt live here.

By Anonymous at March 20, 2007 3:27 PM

21.

look, just because you don't have any money and your parents don't have any money, does not make you: smart, interesting or correct.

i doubt that #9, michelle, knows anything about construction. and for sure, nothing about that building. do you have an inspection report for that property?? i do. it's an excellent building. (i paid for the inspector, not the developer - fyi). also, that building has only 1 remaining apartment, so i think its success means that actual BUYERS, not blog posters, were convinced of its solid construction.

i own in that complex. you can hate all you want, but i have a huge, beautiful, sunny apartment with central air in the middle of prime williamsburg. i do not own a penthouse, but i looked at them. the views are amazing. considering that the state park will run on the waterfront to bet. N.7th + N 9th, the views will probably last. All apartments have access to the common roof decks too to enjoy.

- my parents did not buy me anything when i was that young, i had to work for my money, but I cannot hold their wealth against them. it's silly.

bottom line - it is a good investment. and, anyway, that girl has to live somewhere.

ps - the racism is gross.

"nyc would be so much better if the ... indians, blacks, jews, hispanics, asians, native americans, irish, muslims, catholics, and wasps didnt live here."

Who, exactly is left? The Russians? NYC would be empty if no one lived here.

the racist comments and personal attacks are completely unnecessary. natasha happens to be a friend of mine and although she eats curry for lunch everyday, she does NOT smell like curry herself.

By sebastian at March 20, 2007 6:27 PM

25.

I am Natasha’s future boyfriend and even if her parents disapprove I will live in that apartment. As far as the curry is concerned "number 6", well we live on the penthouse so is not like there are people above us.

By Anonymous at March 20, 2007 7:10 PM

26.

Hey condodweller, it's not about 'holding (your parents) wealth against them.' Not at all. They deserve their wealth if they made it. It's about mooching off of their wealth because you haven't worked as hard or been as succesful on your own. This isn't class-anxiety, as everyone who hasn't been given a handout is basically in the same class in this country. It's about independence and succeeding on your own--something a trustfunder can never, ever experience because they have willingly bent over and taken the payout.

By Lugnut at March 20, 2007 7:24 PM

how do you have any idea about her life and what she has worked for. these comments allude to having not read the article. id much rather be a spoiled individual than a racist prick any day

chico, are you sure about that?

The passing of money from one generation to the next is legitimate and has a long tradition -- from the rich all the way down to the working class. It's the way generations move up in the world throughout history.

There is not one person on curbed who got to where they are without some help from someone along the line. To believe that you are self-made is beyond ridiculous.

By Bing at March 21, 2007 9:28 AM

30.

what would you think of natasha if she turned down the offer? You'd have to be a moron to pass up a million bucks.

By Anonymous at March 21, 2007 9:37 PM

31.

It doesn't matter the situation, there's always holier-than-thou haters, and I can't imagine too many people who could honestly say "If my parents offered to help me buy a condo in Manhattan or Williamsburg or wherever, I'd flat out refuse." It's easy for a lot of people to say that because they will never be in that situation, but enough already for riffing on people who's parents were sucessful and want the best for their kids.

I walked down Bedford today, hair slicked back, in a full suit, on my way to catch the rush hour L train. Manohman, the hatred on so many of the young, Hipstery mens faces when they set eyes on my type. It is absolutely hilarious and strangely satisfying to know my mere presence irks them so. On Monday I think I'm going to walk down the street counting a big roll of 20s as I stroll by them wearing my Tumi messenger bag.

One of these days there's gonna be a showdown, West Side Story style. Settle this whole war once and for all.
