Make Your Very Own Illegal Apartment!

Truth in advertising like this is one of those things that makes life worth living. Queens Crap found this diamond in a listing for some new buildings in Queens and writes:

It appears that the developers of this urban trailer park on Flushing Ave in Maspeth are getting a bit anxious to sell the units. The realtors are advertising the nice two car garage that comes with one of these units - and enticing potential buyers by pointing out that the garage can be converted into an illegal apartment!
Oh, and the development, Maspeth Mews, is billed as bringing the "style of yesteryear" back to life and offering "old world character that has long been forgotten in new construction." Awesome.

hahaha, that is funny

Of course it's not a typo. If the buildings dept. tries to arrest you, John Liu will shut them down by claiming you were racially targetted.

By Anonymous at April 4, 2007 2:34 PM

5.

How can they post that? Now they are in trouble.

By James at April 4, 2007 2:39 PM

Typo? What was it supposed to say, "convertible to apt for illegals"?

taken from QueensCrap:

All is well said...
Please do not publicize this.

You are not supposed to be aware that illegal apartments exist, and should look the other way. It is an integrated fabric of our city.

Queens Borough President H. Marshal has threatened to address the problem years ago with the DOB and HPD. We haven't heard much noise lately, and should expect their efforts have taken effect, and the issue abated.

The general claims of lower quality of life, the overcrowding, straining of services, not to mention safety concerns, are unsubstantiated. PLEASE LOOK THE OTHER WAY.
Otherwise, where will tenants of questionable backgrounds live?
Who will derelict landlords look to exploit to make undocumented income?

Please be considerate. This (sometimes literal) underground system of illegal apartments has existed for a long time. If the DOB, HPD, and elected officials do not consider it a problem. Then it isn't.

The newspaper may make a big deal about deadly fires in illegal apartments. But soon after, we forget about it, and look forward to affording one of those new luxury condo-miniums that are sprouting up. One day perhaps.

Puhlease! If you thought brokers were bad, Foxton brokers are the bottom of the barrell. If you could imagine it.

Maspeth used to be so nice...now it's all illegal apartments as far as the eye can see.

Pretty much every house in Staten Island has an illegal unit, but they do not rent them out. There is something about italians and needing to have 2 kitchens, maybe all the pizza.

Mike, please continue to spread the word about Maspeth being a dive. We appreciate people like you keeping our rent affordable.

Any updates on that church they were trying to save in Maspeth?

By kyle at April 4, 2007 3:31 PM

the entire borough of queens is a dive. What a great idea the creator of the queens crap blog had. He will never run out of ideas. He just needs to throw a darts at a map and write an entry.

I was went to an open house for a newly constructed townhouse out in Brooklyn. The conversation went like this:

Broker: "the door in back allows the basement apt to have access to the backyard"

Me: Is it possible to get a COO for the basement?

Broker: Probably not, but no one will be able to afford the mortgage if they didn't rent out the basement.

Queens Crap

While your heart is being warmed, most people who see the name of your blog are thinking what #15 said. I understand what your point is with the name, but you should really consider changing the name of your blog to something that doesn't give people an excuse to slam Queens.

And #15, you obviously haven't been to Queens, where there are many beautiful neighborhoods. Go to Forest Hills Gardens, the historic district of Jackson Heights or the new sleek high rises of Long Island City and then tell me that all of Queens is a "dive".

By FH Guy at April 4, 2007 9:59 PM

22.

Sunnyside Gardens is pretty nice too...as are Little Neck, Douglaston, etc.

Malba is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

Astoria Park is great too.

By kyle at April 4, 2007 10:46 PM

23.

But FH Guy, why not bring a little of that FH Luxury to Maspeth?

"Atop of the concrete block structure, window accents created in the stucco create a look that can be seen in the many of the homes in the affluent Forest Hills Gardens area of Queens."

By greg.org at April 5, 2007 1:16 AM

24.

Forest Hills Gardens and the historic district of Jackson Heights are pretty well protected by zoning and landmark laws from being invaded by crap houses. Malbe is full of McMansions and has pretty much been ruined. "The new sleek highrises of LIC" are ugly and out of character with the surrounding low density neighborhood.

By Julie at April 5, 2007 1:27 AM

25.

That 'surrounding low density neighborhood' of most of LIC will be all high rises in awhile.

Cities expand and NYC is expanding into LIC..it was inevitable.

By kyle at April 5, 2007 10:07 AM

26.

Why Forest Hills Gardens now?

Why not the Windsor and Park Lane Towers?

By Stone at April 5, 2007 10:15 AM

27.

Stone, please stop stalking me. Following me around is not going to make me respond to your wacky comments.

By FH Guy at April 5, 2007 9:04 PM

28.

Oh stop. Everyone has to get their snark in. I am no defender of Foxtons but that is a data feed and not their listing. Maspeth is a decent neighborhood. No reason to crap on it.
