Advertecture Attacks the Home: Et Tu, Foot Locker?

Monday, April 16, 2007, by Joey

You've probably seen those ads that get projected onto the sides of buildings, but usually that form of guerilla advertising is saved for commercial and touristy areas. Usually. We bring you the plight of an East Village resident, who—from 10 p.m. to midnight a couple of recent night—practically had the ads beamed into his living room:

After speaking with 311, in hopes that someone from the city would come out immediately to fix the problem, I took it to the streets. Before confronting the guerrilla advertiser, I checked the zoning law and this advertising posted on the newly developed 101 East 10th Street (in a C6-1 district) is illegal. When I went to the street, the guy--who said he was employed by "street blimps"-- said that he would take it down if it was a problem. Considering the direct light in my apartment felt like it was high noon, I told him that 1. he was in violation of zoning codes, 2. the Department of Buildings is on him, 3. Community Board 3 has been notified, he took it down.

Needless to say, Adidas and Foot locker should be in for some trouble as I will continue to follow up with CB 3 and DOB.
It's like the downtown version of the Kenny Rogers' Roasters episode of Seinfeld. Must. Buy. Trendy. Sneakers.

As much as I probably would have gone after the guy too, this guy/girl should really invest in some drapes. Those blinds dont block anything.

If there was a problem with the ad, just ask the guy to take it down like a civilized person.

When you start reporting people the the community board, and start quoting city regulations, you just make yourself out to be a prick.

No wonder native New Yorkers despise you pricks from Ohio, Wisconcin, and the rest of those shithole places.

ANON: Um... You woudn't happen to work for that joke of a "geurilla" ad agency, would you? Look, the only pricks here are the douchebags who tried to project this crap video, and FootLocker. Of course this kind of shit is illegal! Not to mention invasive and tacky. 3 major no-no's in the marketing biz. You're lucky this guy didn't call 911, instead. And I hope "street blimp" and Foot Locker are out a bunch of money becasuse they should've known better.

#2 you're an idiot. Nothing against asking nicely, but these are corporations. You think asking nicely will stop them? Hasn't yet. It may have worked in this instance, but tomorrow it will be someone else in some other part of the city. Reporting them to 311 has little chance to do much either, but at least its a chance these a-holes in marketing wake up. Drapes would be a solution to a street light, but shouldn't be required because someone is shining a movie into your house.

And enough with your hatred of the midwest. Get over it, no one is asking you to move there. And for all your posturing on what you think they are like, you're playing into the stereo-types of NYers (you know arrogant ass-holes). Before you get in a meritless bigotry battle, you may want to stop and think. You may not be as superior as you seem to think you are.

Blah, Blah, Blah - like #6 said, enough with the Midwest Blame Game. I've been living here all my life, and in several different areas of the city, and believe me, the biggest, loudest, shrill complainers are Native NY'ers! Ok so, the guy was direct- maybe he was cranky because he couldn't sleep, I dunno. Either way this type of advertising is not only illegal, it's freaking cheesey.

That is very funny!

You are the real loser though. You live on the UES and the company just made money from his client by using your window space.

LOOOOOOOOOOSER!
