One of the complaints about the controversial summer concert series at Williamsburg's McCarren Pool is that the programming isn't diverse enough. Last year's set of shows seemed to cater to hipsters, and hipsters only. This summer, it looks like the organizers are at least trying to branch out a little, because as BrooklynVegan reports, the hippie jambands Disco Biscuits and Umphrey's McGee have been booked to play the pool in August. So how are the hipsters taking it? Not well. Not well at all:
In the end, the irritating fans and monotony of the music caused me to abandon jam bands for greener pastures. So says Crooked Rain. Adds Free Williamsburg: "Obviously, Live Nation (aka Clear Channel) has its fingers on the pulse of Williamsburg." Meow! Folks, the run-down, decrepit old pool is to be shared, not hoarded. Play nice!SO, be sure to avoid McCarren Park and Bedford Ave on 8/15 if troves of Long Island hippy stoners and twenty-minute suck-fest songs scare you as much as they scare me.
1.
It should be more diverse, sure, but what exactly is the point of catering to Long Island kids, other than profits for LiveNation?
By Oldmark at April 19, 2007 12:05 PM3.
The WBurg hipster crowd tries so damn hard with their skinny jeans, the whole *too good and cultured to shop in Manhattan with the masses* to good to listen to the music that the masses listen to*
It's becoming increasingly apparent that the Wburg hipster crowd can be just as bad, if not worse than the snobs that populate the Upper East Side. Too bad the WBurg hipsters haven't accomplished a damn thing worthy of being a snob.
By Anonymous at April 19, 2007 12:19 PM4.
As much as I hate hipsters, hippes are far worse.
Tickets go onsale at 4:20pm on 4/20? No wonder people make fun of hippies. Take away the drugs and all you have left is bad music.

Whatever, hippies suck. That's what they made California for.
I pray to god the NYPD does random searches on these jobless leeches and puts them all away on possession.
14.
I love the venue and last year's concerts were great. While I love the jam band scene (and yes, without the drugs or alcohol, some of the music is bad), at least there are bands willing to play here and bands big enough to get a crowd. Some of the hipster bands just don't have a big enough following and/or suck. If these dumbass hipsters want more diversity, get more bands that people will want to see to sign up. Most likely, the hipster bands though will think they're too cool for the venue though. Dumbass pompous hipsters! Go Back to Hipsteria!
By Adam at April 19, 2007 1:17 PM16.
Turn it down a notch Adam, your love of mega-bands & all things Live Nation makes you sounds like a shill. It's cool if you're only into bands who bring in a "crowd", but I'd recommend going to more concerts at MSG if that's the case.
By Marlon at April 19, 2007 1:34 PM17.
Either use it as a pool, or fill it in with cement. I personally can't understand why anyone would want to stand in the sweltering heat, and listen to crappy music to begin with. Only in NY.
By Anonymous at April 19, 2007 1:40 PM18.
Right on # 17 !!!! Its totally absurd that they have concerts 50 feet from where people LIVE. Its a PARK people - not a concert venue. Knock it down and build a garden!!

Man this thing looks like something out of communist China. Where's the 10 story photo of dung chow ping? Did it fall off accidentally during the recent rain? I'd avoid this place like the plague for fear that a couple of large tanks might come rolling in.
By anon at April 19, 2007 1:57 PM20.
i don't think there's anything wrong with diversifing hte shows, just throw them into a large venue for hippies, soul kids, creeper wearing sock hop kids, tight jeaned crying kids and stroller pushing people; all listen together. isn't that what summer is about? gentrify the burg, bring a rap band in for all i care... but last year they did have jazz, soul and some other bands for the free sundays, so i'm not sure what your talking about.
By union avenue at April 19, 2007 1:59 PM21.

Central Park has concerts- this is not a Park, it's a public pool..or at least it was. It's also extremely noisy to the surrounding population i.e it's much too close to a residential area. But then, this is NY, and nobody really gives a damn about anyone else so....

LOL, salsa shows? I'm sure the Polish & Italian old-timers in the area would LOVE that. All the non-whites coming into the area was one of the reasons they clamored to close the pool in the first place. (of course, they described it as the pool attracting "crime" into the area)
By Marlon at April 19, 2007 2:41 PM33.

By Anonymous at April 19, 2007 4:35 PM42.
Uh, Bryant Park, Battery Park, Prospect Park - pretty much every park has concerts, many with ampitheatres right by residences - maybe you are the one with the "I'm the only one who exists" syndrome. The same people who shut the pool down in the first place to keep the black kids out.
By Anonymous at April 19, 2007 4:57 PM43.
3 or 4 venues a week - including all day Sunday???? I think NOT.Some shows not ending until 10:30pm. Mant people have children.Im sure you'd love those noise levels 100 ft from YOUR house. Open up the pool - do whatever you like with it- have plays, open it up to artists, etc. - but brutally loud venues multiple times a week is ridiculous.

Actually, looking at the area surrounding McCarren Park (or just north-of-Grand in general) the white population edges out the hispanic population by a couple of thousand. You don't have to take my word for it, just check out http://gis.nyc.gov/dcp/pa/address.jsp & see for yourself.
Of course, most PR's nowadays can't speak spanish & identify themselves as white, which could throw off the census..but that's another topic for another day.
By Marlon at April 19, 2007 6:37 PM46.
hippies was a term coined by the stiff adult population to described the anti-establishment music loving youth of a former generation who listened to the bands that played with and influenced many hipster icons (at least in terms of fashion) such as the velvet underground. the only difference between the hipsters and the hippies besides dress at this point is that youth in general is to busy disliking each other based on their outfits to actually do anything worthwhile. the young people that do spend their thoughts and time wisely generally don't befriend you on your sally hershberger shag or your widespread panic t-shirt. you are all assholes and i thing kim and thurston would probably agree.

Man, you people are crazy. Anyway, Greenpoint and Northside Williamsburg has always been like .... 98% white, and probably for very interesting, maybe violent reasons.
Not sure why people complain about white people invading Brooklyn when it's always been majority white ... NJ has more mixed cities than that.
By anonymous at April 20, 2007 11:28 AM65.
"Majority white"? Dude, check the stats & cue up "White Minority." PLAY LOUD.
Just because you don't know it doesn't mean it ain't true. (BK has been BLACK POPULATION CENTER OF NYC since late 40s btw, tho' white minority as % of total didn't occur until later.)
To suggest schism between Latino (& Hasid) southside & the Pole/Ital northside is correct but there's ALWAYS been PR enclaves in Greenpoint. Look closely even now at Manhattan Ave businesses, tho' there you're seeing Mexican surge as elsewhere in the city.
In let's-call-it central WB, say from Union Ave to B'wick Ave, from Grand to Broadway... it's STILL PR & DR holdout. Then there's the projects in East WB on Kingsland, etc etc.
WHITE PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!
Ya'll ain't special & most of your "indie" music sucks.

By grptr at April 20, 2007 12:07 PM67.
What the hell is wrong with you people? Have you ever thought of expanding your own musical tastes, listening to something a little deeper than verse-chorus-verse? There is much more to "hippy jamband music" than, well, hippies and jams. Just as there is more to "hipster" music than some of the cross-armed head-nodding tight-pant-wearing williamsburgites that listen to it.
And not all Disco Biscuits fans are from Long Island.
Pull your heads out of your uptight asses and take note that pigeonholing music fans just perpetuates the closed-minded rudeness that gives a bad name to the rest of the people who live in Brooklyn.
68.
ALSO you fuckwad retards, Brooklyn has a ** RICH ** musical history long before there was anything but local "ethnic" stuff in Williamsburg (inc. those awesome Italian marching bands that sometimes still parade around summer mornings.)

63: Hello, Williamsburg Hipsters! Allow me to introduce myself. I am one of those new residents on the edge of McCarren Park, and as much as I love the idea of an open air venue for free music, the whole McCarren pool thing is the most ghetto-retarded thing on the planet that only a dumb-ass Hipster could appreciate.
I can assure you with ultimate certainty that as we continue to invade "your" neighborhood, we will begin to shape it into something WE want, in accordance with our property tax contribution. And you will all just suck it up and deal with it. Because you have *NO* other choice.

The concerts in the pool are great. Period. The shows I saw last summer were in the early evening. The sun was setting and there was a nice breeze. it seems like this whole hate-filled thread originates from the comments of a few residents of williamsburg that everyone assumes represent the whole population of the area. these comments don't come from spokesmen of the area. plus, the implication from most of the comments is that the world would be a better place without "hipsters."
"hipsters" have created the quality of life in willliamsburg/greenpoint that has made it desireable...ie without them there would be no condos around macarren park or the waterfront....i don't recall the area being desirable to anyone beside them, poles, puerto ricans and hasides when it was just a crime-ridden puerto rican, polish, and hassidic neighborhood.
further, the endless stream of comments around this topic shows that there's a lot of ignorance towards a great number of people that live in the area. where is the epicenter of artistic creativity in new york? it's there and in bushwick. a large amount of the music, film, art, and web media that keeps new york relevant culturally to the rest of the country and the world and improves everyone's quality of life originates there. so before judging people whom you do not know or understand see how much of your quality of life they have created.
you may not go to the museums and galleries of new york but you're probably glad they exist because new york is not new york without them. the coffee shops, restaurants, bars, shops and infrastructure that support them are all spawned from the "bohemian" lifestyle that "hipsters" provide in this area both directly or indirectly (some people inevitably invested in businesses in the area because the neighborhood was desirable).
maybe you don't go to the music clubs but they've historically been a large part of forming new york's image and continue to do so. you may not be gay or african, or arty or whatever but we're happy those demographics exist because otherwise we'd be anything but the "capital of the world."
all who moved to new york or continue to live here voluntarily do so because we like the balance of economic and cultural influences and opportunities that provide us with a quality of life that available in few other places in the world. so before complaining about all the people who scratch your back ask yourself who is really close-minded.
By jtr3 at April 23, 2007 11:03 AM86.
"Hipsters... have created the quality of life in willliamsburg/greenpoint that has made it desireable."
I'll commend you for trying to piece together a coherent rant. But this line is laughable. Williamsburg is desirable because of its proximity to Manhattan and better bang for your buck in terms of housing. Most people I know who have recently moved here can't wait for inevitable completion of the Hipster exodus.
And so it goes.
By Anonymous at April 23, 2007 6:03 PM87.
you silly cunts. Why did you buy there if you knew about the pool. Buyers remorse aleready? Feel like an ass dont you. May your condos with huge windows get egged during the concerts. May your childern scream with discontent when they are unable to sleep because of the youth outside your windows enjoying a concert in the typical rowdy hipster willyburg way. May you get no responses to your complaints about the concerts from your hasidic management. I say long live the hipster of willyburg. You made it what it is. You made it covetable and cool. And the poles, italians, hispanics and blacks, give yourselves a pat on the back too. You made it. These wankers in the new condos wont last a year before they're scared to leave their condos for fear of coming face to face with someone with actual innate talent for music, art or writing. Either that, or your banker wives will be fucking that hipster boy that she met at the pool concert whilst you were working late.
Go to hell new residents. But, for sure, pass through here first so we can make your lives a living hell-just like how it was for you at school you twats.

87: Lady Madonna, it's just that kind of response that makes baiting people like you so much fun.

Now I know what link to send people when I want to explain why I left New York. Thanks, everyone, for acting like complete assholes in a public forum!!!
