Soho Mews Revealed: Tartan Grid, Anyone?

Behold! It's the first rendering of Charles Gwathmey's Soho Mews that's been made public, comin' at ya via Intelligencer. Like what you see? Then act fast, because this puppy is on the market already. Writes Alec Appelbaum:

It's a tasteful, intriguing new condo that's a clever update of Soho's cast-iron factory tradition. The façade uses different treatments of glass, frosted here and unvarnished there, to create what Gwathmey describes as an "active Tartan grid" that will glow with different colors at different times of day.
Trippy! Also, the interior courtyard thing is a go.

When will these washed up old pieces of crap "C" level architects ever stop working?
Gwathmey like in Gwathmey Siegel never built a building that was worth a shit. GIVE IT UP GUYS! Move to the Hamptons and drop dead for god's sake. Give the younger guys a shot.

Tartan grid? Gwathmey is now left with jumping on the multicolor glass bandwagon. And the precast will still look like 1985 - just take a look at their condo on Park Avenue south.

It is not 'tartan, which is a type of plaid that is registered and associated with a specific clan, regiment or organization. For example, "Dress Stewart" is a tartan commonly used in fashion.
Or "Black Watch" tartan is associated with the Highland regiment.

Instead, the SoHo Mews façade is just a plain old plaid.

"Active 'plaid' grid" just doesn't sound as sexy.
But that's what it is.

Well, on a positive note, Gwathmey's banal, gracelessly detailed "active Tartan grid" -- what a sexy marketing concept! -- is vastly preferable to the aggressively dated hideousness of his "sculpture for living" on Astor Place, which made an "undulating" reflective travesty out of one of the best building sites in New York City. Soho should count itself lucky if it ends up with a ho-hum building from a man who's obviously capable of ruining the visual fabric of an entire neighborhood.

While looking for a new apt in the Soho area, I ran across the Mews. What a surprise and unless you actually look at the finishes and how the residences are designed don't comment. The courtyard and facilities are a great attribute to City living.. It's well done!!
