Does Randall's Island Water Park Sleep with the Fishes?

Tuesday, September 18, 2007, by Robert

2007_09_RandallsWaterPark.jpgDon't look now, but that plan to build a $168 million water park on Randall's Island may be in deep, deep trouble. The developer is six months behind schedule and has until tomorrow to prove that he has the cash to build the project. And, if you're looking for signs of seriously impending doom, the City Comptroller is suggesting that the city broke its own rules by extending the original deadline for the developer and that the bidding process should be reopened. He says the developer, Aquatic Development Group, should be dumped. The park would have had 26 acres of water slides, wave pools and man-made rivers. The bottom line of this water drama is that it's looking like it will be a while before anyone can pack their swimsuits and head to Randall's Island, if at all.

More great news in the movement to protect our public shorelines and open space on Randall's Island!

Thought to share this letter with you all from the NYC Comptroller, William Thompson.

In it he reiterates his opposition to the waterpark and points out that fifteen moths later, it is still in limbo, and NYC taxpayers could be in the lurch for up to $100 million now.

Good work team!

Thanks for your support on this ongoing issue. This is another strong step in the wave to stop the inappropriate use of our public land for corporatization of public space!

Here's an article about it for publication on 9-18-07

&&&&&&&&********* Contact The Mayor today, and tell him:

Drown the waterpark and private beach proposal for Randall's Island. It was a Mayor Giuiliani era project that needs to be terminated. Thank you.
