LOWER EAST SIDEThe Tower of Fun, pictured above as it appeared this afternoon on Canal Street, has been generating emails. The tipster who captured it action in the photo writes, "For the second evening in a row I've passed by the 'Tower of Fun' on my way home: it's parked on the corner of Canal and Essex, right by the triangle ("Straus Square") and the East Broadway subway station." Another tipster fills in some detail: "I even saw a live cop peer out the window and then lower the contraption as other of NY's finest approached the tower. From what I heard, there have been a few muggings and the like in and around the E. Broadway subway station."
MIDTOWNIf you're heading to the Mansfield Hotel media event tonight, brace for the gift bags. A tipster reports, "I hear that the Mansfield hotel is including ipods in the gift bags at the media event/opening party tonight. Gross! But i still want to go!"
WILLIAMSBURGAs expected, work to dispatch Williamsburg's Giant Fart Cloud Building to the big gas works in the sky is underway, and it has not been uneventful today. A special correspondent updates: "They're digging up the sidewalk in front of the cabbage factory/5 Roebling. It's now just a giant hole that some guy is working inside...I think there's something wrong down there. There had been a steady stream of water oozing out from under the gate, so maybe there's a main break or something. Who knows."
This "Tower of Fun" is quite an improvement for this neighborhood, which is quite a slum, maybe even an asian ghetto. It is a shame that it is not a permanent addition to the streetscape. We must appreciate every minute that it blesses us by its presence.
Back when the Tower of Fun lived up across from 111CPN for a long time last year, I walked by daily on my way home from work. One night, when the tower was low, I could see through its tinted window. Inside: a cop eating a salad!
to #1: you're just apparently jealous that you don't live in this interesting neighborhood!
Great. Now if we could just get them to shoot the drunken motherfuckers that fill the streets all night howling and puking, it'll be worth the eyesore. I'm actually not joking by the way.
hey #1, Don't come down here to mug us ! I am gonna #$#%^ you up.
2004 IM'd. They want their free ipod promotion back.
The Tower of Fun was still there this morning. Just like yesterday morning there was a cop standing next to it arguing with a citizen about something. Different citizen this time, though.
How do I get a free ipod?
#1 Obviously doesn't live in this neighborhood. Anyway, if there has been a recent spike in muggings, it's comforting to know that the police are preemptive about crime. I think they chose a great spot for the "tower of fun", since the location they chose--Strauss square--is the convergence of East Broadway, Canal, Esset and Rutgers street. Modern day equivalent of cops walking the beat.
I took some pictures with my camera/phone on my way home the other night and was greeted by several cops. The asked for ID and had confab with the chief who then questioned what I was doing.
I have been treated better in Tiananmen Square. If you don't think your civil liberties are being trampled on, think again.
Tower of fun is gone. Order has been restored. A friend of mine was invited into the tower of fun and said it looked like cash cab.
