Here Come the Crazy Hudson Yards Ideas

Tuesday, October 2, 2007, by Joey

2007_10_peoplemover.jpgIn the most stunning mass transit idea since Santiago Calatrava's gondolas to Governors, the Post reports today that part of the Durst Organization's bid for the 26-acre Hudson Yards site on the West Side involves building a "people mover" to shuttle residents and office workers to and from Penn Station. The light rail system would be run by the MTA, meaning the alleged one-minute ride would actually take a half-hour. Pictured at right is the city of Detroit's people mover. You hear that, everyone, we can be just like Detroit!

What a dumb idea. People in NYC know how to walk. If you're going to do something stupid like that, put in a moving sidewalk so it can be broken all the time.

I think this is a good idea. Works in Jersey City, Tokyo, Miami..................

Dumb. If an area needs to be served by mass transit, extend the existing infrastructure. Don't build piecemeal solutions that require additional transfers and totally separate operations and maintenance. It may be cheaper, but it's shortsighted and clumsy.

Channeling "The Music Man"

Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
Like a genuine,
Bona fide,
Electrified,
Six-car
Monorail!
What'd I say?

Ned Flanders: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: What's it called?

Patty+Selma: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: That's right! Monorail!

[crowd chants `Monorail' softly and rhythmically]

Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud...

Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.

Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend?

Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend.

Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?

Lyle Lanley: You'll be given cushy jobs.

Abe: Were you sent here by the devil?

Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level.

Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can.

Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man.

I swear it's Springfield's only choice...
Throw up your hands and raise your voice!

All: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: What's it called?

All: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: Once again...

All: Monorail!

Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken...

Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken!

All: Monorail!
Monorail!
Monorail!

[big finish]

Monorail!

Homer: Mono... D'oh!

If you read your OWN source it says:

"Barowitz said the cost of a people mover has yet to be calculated. It would be operated by the developer and NOT the MTA."

By Ugh at October 2, 2007 10:21 AM

8.

Actually a people mover in the form of a trolley LRV running in a loop down 34th street to the new ConEd development south of the United Nations going north to 42nd street and going down 42nd street to the convention center and back down to 34th street. This would be a good alternative to the crosstown buses and could turn both 34th (major shopping area) and 42nd (major tourist area) into pedestrian friendly zones.

FACTS: Brilliant and the best solution. Moe not less.

While they're at it they should continue a light rail line up Eleventh Avenue to W. 57th and on to W. 72nd.

If we were truly visionary (and not broke!), we could have planned the Second Avenue subway as part of a large loop that crossed under central park and continued to the far west side and then back, perhaps along Houston --since we were digging up the street anyhow! I like that feature in the London Underground, where one line functions as a large central loop that links up at some point along its route with every other line. Of course in this case, the G would still be left out...

The MTA would never go for this. Witness the 42nd St. streetcar proposal.

they already have this from the LIRR Jamaica Station to JFK. It works really well actually.

I agree with the FACTS #8. We need to start having less cars in the central business district (or at least make it VERY inconvenient to drive in midtown)

By bloomieboy at October 2, 2007 5:39 PM

14.

Like Houston? Like HOUSTON??? LIKE HOUSTO ????!!!?!!?!?

And the train from the LIRR to JFK is stupid. It takes an hour to get there from Manhattan and then you have to pay more and do all that changing. They should have run the existing subway line there.

15.

Not THAT Houston, you Texas cow plugger. The STREET.

By pantagleize at October 2, 2007 8:03 PM

16.

Well, you know there's already a subway under Houston Street.
