Gandars Getting Goosed by Big Karl Fischer

The building at the corner of Grand and Driggs in Williamsburg on which we've reported from time to time, is on its way out. The scaffolding is up and the demo crews are coming. What's interesting about 227 Grand is that the building apparently has a little bit of a history "dating back to the early days of Williamsburgh" in the words of Brooklyn 11211. It was a bookstore belonging to J. C. Gandar, "a civic and literary leader of early Williamsburgh." The new building would be a 15-story Karl Fischer which should make for an interesting backdrop to nearby Fillmore Place, which as been proposed for landmarking.

The new zoning laws were half-ass when it comes to the southside.

It's too bad that building didn't survive in its original form, it was pretty cool.

Why must they always make the new buildings such an awful, awful gray? Are they trying to create some new form of Stalinist distopia to counter the burgeoning tide of creativity?

Grand is actually the dividing line between North and South, so actually the North side of Grand would be the Northside.

i dont think zoning laws use grand as the divider. the soutside police precinct officially starts at n 1st. so who knows.

The demand for housing is so great people will take whatever they can get. Do you want buildings as nice as the ones built before the 1964 zoning act? Advocate for its repeal

2) The building fully conforms with zoning laws. It is small and ugly because that is what the zoning laws dictate. It should be 10x this size.

I'll go out on a limb and be the first to welcome this new Karl Fischer development over the piece of 1-story oversized-obsolete retail garbage property that has been altered too far to even make any resemblance with what Brooklyn11211.com is talking about.

Buildings that have a piece of curved frontage dating back to the 1840s and nothing else don't even deserve honorable mention in any website/blog.

My fantasy when I moved here four years ago was to make that building into the only movie theatre in the hood. But I didn't know how to get the investors, and so the dream fizzled. And now apparently they're building a movie theatre anyway, on Metropolitan Ave.

I live just around the corner, and frankly I think that the building could've been restored to its original charm - there's nice old architectural detail there if you just look beyond the bricked-up windows. Its sad, to me. Having a finger building in that spot? Really preposterous. Dan Doctoroff, Deputy Mayor, is the devil. He's the equivalent of Robert Moses, 2007 version.

Its all over... everything's way out of control. I'm all for development, but its now just all about indiscriminate greed. Oh well.. where are my pills? Where are they... oh there.

Ahhhhh. Now I feel better. Much... better now. Nothing bothers me now. Ahhh...

One time, I farted in front of that building, and it was the most horrible stench, I've ever smelt!!! So I don't want it to go away. I have great memories there. Like that amazing old fart. Wow, what an experience!
