Has Pier A's Ship Finally Come In?

Someday soon, tourists may frolick at Pier A, a 122-year-old structure with a three-story Victorian building that has been rotting for nearly three decades. The latest plan is to turn it over to the Battery Park City Authority for renovation into "a hub that links parks and attractions around the harbor to the rest of the city. The building would get shops and restaurants and the city hopes the National Park Service would use the pier for ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The chair of the BPC Authority said, "The people at Battery Park City have been distressed by its unsightly appearance for some time now." This isn't the first attempt at a Pier A redo. A previous effort, nearly 25 years ago, went nowhere. The last time things were looking good for the Pier was 2005. Not much happened then, either, and here we are. No word on cost or on a timetable, but we can hardly wait to snack on the crispy green bean fries and potato skins at a waterside TGIF around 2015ish.
