Maki Rolls into Astor Place, Looks Sharp

The Real Estate comes through with the Manhattan reveal of the day (though there's still time), Japanese starchitect Fumihiko Maki's design for the new "jewel box" office building being developed by Edward Minskoff at 51 Astor Place. The 440,000-square-foot thingamajig will take the place of Cooper Union's engineering building, which is also known as the ugly beige eyesore connected to the Starbucks (No, no, the other Starbucks in Astor Place). Maki's rendering is slightly insane, so we'll revisit The Real Deal's initial description of the design:

[The exterior will be] Black granite with clear glass and a ribbing material. The building will rise 145 feet, with one section reaching 13 stories and a shorter part going up to 11 stories. Minskoff said the building will aim for the U.S. Green Building Council's gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) status.

Oh, and also, it'll poke your eye out, kid.
