Dead Bodies to Make Way for Real Ones? Not So Fast!

With its big new waterfront park and community spaces galore, the West Side is the successful big brother that the East Side is struggling to emulate. Sure, there's the continued work and proposals for the new East River waterfront, but that just won't do, according to Community Board 1. General Growth Properties, the company planning the redevelopment of the South Street Seaport mall and the empty Fulton Fish Market, won't reveal the complete details of their extravaganza until the spring, but this week they met with CB1 to discuss earmarking some space for community use. They suggested the second floor of the Fulton Fish Market building, where the never-ending "Bodies" exhibit is, and the new East Side Community Center Task Force laughed. Oh, how they laughed and laughed and laughed! To the point where the developers quickly took the proposal off the table to save some face, later explaining to the Downtown Express that the 30,000-square-foot Fish Market idea wasn't meant to stand alone. General Growth's plan may include a mixed-use tower up to 360 feet high, so CB1 wants a major public space trade-off. Because ... the community will want to spend time at the South Street Seaport?
