Off in a corner of Brooklyn that's fairly remote to a lot of people, the Brooklyn Navy Yard has just kind of been there for a long time, housing industrial enterprises and affording people who get on the property great photos of the old surviving buildings. Today's Daily News, however, notes the property "is in the midst of a renaissance" and that the Navy Yard Development Corp. is opening up the waterfront to developers. First up is a plot of land off Sands St. that has opened to competitive bidding to developers. The site in question, an NYPD tow lot, is actually very well known to a lot of people, but not for such good reasons. The Development Corp. is looking for a developer interested in building at least 135,000 square feet and four stories in the First Circle of Towed Car Hell. The Navy Yard is said to be at 98 percent occupancy and major expansions are planned, including the very controversial plan to demolish Admiral's Row and replace it with a supermarket and parking lot.
