Arrested Development: Mean Gene's 1 Greene Out of Money?

2009_6_341canal.jpgThe developer of the Gene Kaufman-designed apartment building slated to rise on the corner of Canal and Greene Streets has gone the way of General Motors, Crain's reports, filing for bankruptcy protection. Though we can't say for sure what Judo Associates' financial ills mean for the long-term future of the seven-story, 58-unit 1 Greene Street, the short term is not looking too hot. Kaufman tells Crain's he hasn't worked on the project—an aluminum imitation of Soho's cast iron architecture—for some time, and he's listed as one of Judo's creditors. If 1 Greene, also known as 371 Canal Street, doesn't come to be, it would be a bit sad, no? For all the hackishness Kaufman churns out for developer Sam Chang's budget hotel empire, 1 Greene was shaping up to at least be something different in the Kaufman oeuvre. Oh well, at least the big wall space next door would be available for upcoming Grand Theft Auto releases.
