This is not something that's important in Manhattan, but it's the equivalent of a revolution in the boroughs: the City Council will probably approve new zoning rules this week that will ban covering some yards with concrete to provide parking. The new regs will require homes to keep 20%-50% of their lawns as, well, lawns. The motivation for the change: all those lawns in Brooklyn and Queens that have been a boon to the concrete industry as they've been turned into parking. Existing concrete lawns are exempt, which also means that there has been a race in some neighborhoods to get concrete poured before the changes take effect. According to the Daily News, the change covers 41,829 acres of neighborhoods.
