On the Racked: Prada Not Into Vendors, Ciao to La Pizza Shop, LIC's Retail Revolution, More

1) Soho: Prada is not fond of vendors. Racked reports that "Sauntering down Broadway late last night, we were attracted over to the Prada window by things other than the magical wood nymphs currently decorating the store." For instance, the warning that "summonses will be issued" to vendors out front.
2) Soho: Say bye-bye to the strange sneaker consignment boutique La Pizza Shop, whose logo was a pizza wrapped in shoe laces (it looked like a wormy meatball). Fear not, however, sneaker buyers, it's coming back as Global NYC.
3) Long Island City: Racked has a look inside to very important upcoming LIC retail outposts, the soon-to-open Market at Long Island City (aka Amish Market) and Duane Reade in Queenswest. After which, the world will no longer be the same.
4) Soho: Perhaps the October opening date for the Topshop on Broadway is a tad optimistic given that the place is still "just a big hole."

Northside Piers Lets Loose with Duane Reade (& New Tower)

Remember the days of the Burg's Kent Avenue being a true Brooklyn wasteland? (All of about two years ago?) Totally doneski. New banners just went up around the Northside Piers complex noting the coming of a second tower and a tipster has pointed us to the website of Walker Malloy, which is handling leasing of the retail space at the Toll Brothers development. Among the many fascinating things therein is: "Duane Reade has taken half of unit C." There's also a list of spaces available and wish list of prospective tenants: "Waterfront restaurant plus three retail units in new three tower high rise project. Wanted: deli, bank, green grocer, hardware, coffee bar, etc." Our tipster, meanwhile, asks: "Is this the death of king’s pharmacy and the end of Williamsburg as we knew it?"

On the Racked: More Orb of Insanity, Brooklyn Flea Ready to Go, Bye Bye Chelsea B&N, More
And now, the latest from Racked, covering shopping and retail from the sidewalks up.

1) New York City: Racked has a full new photo gallery of images of the "conceptual lovechild of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and architect Zaha Hadid," that UFO-like Chanel Mobile Art Container will crash land somewhere in New York in September 2008.
2) Fort Greene: It's two weeks and counting to the opening of Brownstoner's Brooklyn Flea, which will be the largest flea market ever in Brooklyn. More than 600 vendors have expressed interest, but only 200 will fit so the offerings will rotate from week to week.
3) Chelsea: Time to say buh bye to the Barnes & Noble on Sixth Avenue. Everything that doesn't sell for 50 percent off will get carted off to Union Square, as speculation about the new tenant continues.
4) East Village: Cross your fingers and really, really, really hope that Duane Reade is better at filling prescriptions than they are at making signs.

Curbed Readers Comment: Hot Threads
1) Lonely Plaza Hotel Now Proven to Be Harmful, Perhaps Deadly (60 Comments)
"The moral -- take out your trash in the morning on your way to work. If you must throw out your trash at night, wear a robe, preferably flannel, and carry your cell phone. P.S. Never let the trash door slam shut on your egg."
2) No Piano: Ratner Pulls Plug on Downtown Brooklyn Tower (57 Comments)
"why does Brooklyn have to have a skyline? Brooklyn is known for its midrise, human scale, brownstone and rowhouse neighborhoods. It needs a 50 story glass box to be considered un-mediocre?"
3) Feeling LIC's Heat, Part I: All Hail Duane Reade (45 Comments)
"Any "battery park city" outside of the city will not survive without retail. so yes, this is needed to create the plastic neighborhood of LIC's waterfront."
4) Construction Watch: LIC's Pulaski Twins Standing Tall (31 Comments)
"They will have the luxury of Midtown tunnel smog coming in through the fedder holes."
Feeling LIC's Heat, Part I: All Hail Duane Reade
We can't deny the perfect storm of Long Island City tips, photos and information that have trickled in over the past couple of days. Folks, we are officially feeling Long Island City's heat. Today we'll be looking at a number of these stories, including this first one, a screed submitted by a reader just this morning. Is it shilly? Hilariously so, but who doesn't love the retail-as-neighborhood-savior debate? Away we go:
I am amazed how far Long Island City has grown and evolved over the past year. As all the new buildings are going up, the retail has been growing as well. We all know a vibrant retail district that includes ample restaurants will dramatically improve the value and sales of new homes and condos. With this I am excited to see that Delta Force Army Navy, one of the last great Army Navy stores in the United States, has opened its flagship store in Long Island City.
Wait, what? Uh, it continues. >>

On the Racked: Dell Tries Being Cool, Crocs Invade UWS, Duane Reade Ruins Christmas, More
And now, the latest from Racked, covering retail and shopping from the sidewalks up.

1) Central Village: Finally, PC users get a cool store. Even if it's a temporary popup. Racked has the goods on the new Dell shop on Broadway between 11th and 12th. There's no glass staircase, but, unlike that other cool new store, there's a bathroom.
2) Upper West Side: The Crocs have invaded with a shiny, new Crocs flagship on Columbus Avenue. It is "filled-to-bursting with all types of Crocs." All types, friends.
3) East Village: Leave it to Duane Reade to ruin Christmas with a "compost pile for damaged bags of cotton and dying house plants." Nasty.
4) LES: Yes, the Steven by Steve Madden store at Ludlow and Rivington Streets is now open: "Nail in coffin, people, nail in coffin."

On the Racked: MePa Goes iPacking, Grosstedes Shuts Self Down, Brooklyn Fox Coming to Burg, More

1) MePa: The finish touches are being put on Apple's massive 14th Street emporium and Racked offers up a sneak peek through the construction gate at the spiral staircase that will convey shoppers to the upper floors. And, yes, there is photographic proof that the opening is happening, Friday at 6:00 PM.
2) West Village: The Hudson Street space that housed what was (not lovingly) known as Grosstedes is turning into a Duane Reade. An emailer writes that the former Gristedes store "was in such a decline, they decided to just close it rather than wait for it to be shut down by DoH."
3) Williamsburg: More signs of change in the Burg as Racked reports on the coming of the new "high-end undie emporium Brooklyn Fox Lingerie." It's going into the mini-mall at 132 N. 5 Street. Just in case one needs elegant underthings around Fifth Avenue and E. 13th Street, Racked also offer that Journelle will be serving up innerwear at 3 East 17th Street.
4) MePa: Finally, designer Adam Lippes is opening ADAM, a 2,500-square-foot boutique at 678 Hudson Street between W 13th and W 14th Streets. Per Racked: "Lippes will stock the shop with his popular soft cotton t-shirts and basic undies as well as his entire line of contemporary sportswear for men and women.
