Calatrava's Tower o' Penthouses Passes On to Great Unknown

2008_04_grim80.jpg

Santiago Calatrava cannot catch a break downtown. His World Trade Center PATH station is slowly being de-Calatrava'd, and now the plug has been pulled on his celebrated stacked cube design at 80 South Street (prices starting ~$30 million). Yep, you read that correctly. The 1,000-foot-tall 80 South Street, developed by Frank Sciame and at one time described as "very close" and "still alive," is, in fact, very not alive. It was just last week when we noted the new renderings for the site floating around the Interweb, designed by architects Cook+Fox. Lois Weiss explains in the Post today that Sciame has put the land up for sale, and it should fetch around $115 million. The Cook+Fox designs were commissioned by an unknown developer, who sought ideas for the site from five firms around six months ago. Very intriguing, as is the news that the spot can be developed as commercial or hotel space as well. For now, though, the glorious 80 South Street website is still active. Head over and pay your respects.
