Construction Watch: ten63's Jagged Edges Have Formed in LIC

2008_02_1063%20Jackson.jpg

Around this time last year, the historic Hackett Building was coming down in Long Island City, brick by brick offering up some high-end destructoporn in the process. Its replacement, ten63, has been rising and the very pointy steel frame is in place. Life has been good to our jagged little friend too: units started hitting the market in the fall and 30 are in contract, leaving only seven angular units to go.

Jagged on Jackson Gets its Price in Long Island City

2007_9_ten63fp.jpg

Hold the phone, folks, there is news from Long Island City! StreetEasy alerts us that the first batch of listings at ten63—the condo development on the site of the demolished Hackett Building at 10-63 Jackson Avenue—have hit the web. Nothing monumental to report: studios starting at $375,000, 1BRs starting at $465,000 and 2BRs starting at $610,000, with an average of $759/sf. Given the sharpness of ten63, the fun lies in the floorplans. Above is a $795,000 two-bedroom listing that your 10th Grade geometry teacher would absolutely love. So, do these listings, ahem, hack it?

Hackett Building's ten63's Edge Still Jagged

2007_7_hackett.jpg

A totally tubular Curbed tipster sends along the above fresh rendering of Long Island City's ten63, which is the condo development springing to life on the old Hackett Building lot (who's up for some destructoporn nostalgia?). It's not much different than our last glimpse at a rendering, but it's nice to see this sharp little guy in a fully realized, daytime setting. The teaser site still isn't offering much, but our tipster's inside info goes a little something like this: sales will start within a few weeks, and the building will have a part-time doorman, gym, roof deck, etc.

Insult to Injury at LIC's Hackett Building Demo

2007_6_hackettstop.jpg

When we last left Long Island City's Hackett Building, it was nearly kaput, to be replaced by this jagged edge. Now, a teaser website for the new development has been unveiled, and there are some gripes. A reader writes:

Maybe there is karma in the world of developers. A few days ago the developers of 10-63 Jackson, the former Hackett Building, introduced the logo for the condos that are being built there. To those of us who've been in the hood a while (certainly a relative term here in LIC) the logo raised some eyebrows. Many of us were sad to see the community-enriching café ten63 shut down to make way for these condos to be built, but it feels a bit like we're being kicked while down when the new logo for the luxury condos is pulled straight from the café: "ten63."

So today as I walked past & saw this stop work order I felt a little bitterness lift from my shoulders. The violation is for unsafe working conditions, though when I snapped this pic, I heard more work than usual going on behind the wooden barrier.

Logo issues aside, what's with that clunky tagline? We'd suggest a new one, but they haven't met our going rate.
