Red Hook Ballfield Vendors Get 6-Year Permit

The Red Hook Ballfield taco vendors have gotten a permit from the Parks Department to operate their food stands for the next six years. Eater is reporting that Parks Department has announced a positive end to the drama that overshadowed much of last year's taco and huarache-eating season. A release quotes Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe as saying "One of the great New York City pleasures is enjoying tacos, huaraches and other fine Latin American cuisine at Red Hook Park,” said Commissioner Benepe. “The Parks Department is happy to keep this longstanding tradition in place." Vendors executive director Cesar Fuentes says the vendors are "thrilled to be able to continue our 33-year-old tradition." Eater has the full text of the release. The vendors had previously said that city requirements for carts costing up to $30,000 could drive many of them out of business, but for now all is well. Huaraches, pupusas and horchata all around starting soon.

Back to the Ballfields: Red Hook Vendors Screwed?

2008_01_Ballfields.jpgThe Red Hook ballfields have been a pretty cold and empty place since the end of the spring and summer taco vending season, and now, the vendors who are a neighborhood staple say they could be out of luck. The Daily News reports that the Parks Department recently opened the ballfields up for competitive bidding as they'd said they would do. Proposals are due by February 12. The vendors say that even if they win, they could be up the creek because of requirements that they use standardized carts that would cost $15,000-$30,000 per vendor. The vendors worry that brining the operation up to code "will ruin the rustic allure that made the spot popular." Says vendor spokesperson Cesar Fuentes: "In the best case scenario, we will get the contract, but will the people who have come to love us be willing to welcome all the changes in the same way?"
