Gowanus Whole Food Site: Open Again!

2007_11_GowanusWholeFoods.jpg

Remember how the toxic Gowanus Whole Foods site was open a few weeks ago and how it got a lot of attention, including some tsk-tsks from Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum? Well, even though a 2008 opening date is a pipe dream, the site itself is open to the public again, so get those rare photo angles on the Gowanus and the site's wetlands vegetation. Don't forget to wash off the shoes before going home, just in case.

Gowanus Whole Foods Fence to be Fixed...Really

2007_10_GowanusWFoods.jpgThe fence around the somewhat toxic Gowanus Whole Foods site is now one of the most well known in the city. It's been down for a couple of weeks, turning the semi-toxic site into a neighborhood playground and providing photographers with excellent, special access for Gowanus Canal photography. Today's Daily News quotes Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum taking a shot at the organic grocer for having a "contaminated site with a broken fence and kids playing in the area." Also, the landmarked Stone Company Building, which had an open door earlier this year, apparently has one again. (It's on the Whole Foods site but isn't owned by the company.) Contaminants on the site include benzene, PCBs and cadmium. The Department of Buildings website shows a complaint about the fence was filed on October 20, but nothing has been done. Whole Foods says it'll handle the problem "as soon as possible." In the meantime, still time to hang out and shoot photos.
