Harlem's Victoria Finally Given Green Light

2007_11_victoria.jpg

The redevelopment of Harlem's legendary Victoria Theater—a long, strange trip that extends back to the beginning stages of this very website—appears to finally be settled. The state has chosen Harlem-based Danforth Development Partners to give the historic and long-dormant 125th Street building a new look. According to the Times' Charles Bagli, the Victoria (seen above in 2002 via Wired New York) will get two live theaters, a space for the Jazz Museum of Harlem, a hotel and 91 condo units. Danforth will preserve and restore the Victoria’s columns, terra cotta rosettes and other bits. The final design appears at top right, and wedged in the middle is one particularly frightening early rendering from the design competition stage, just as a fun reminder of what could have been.
