LES W Hotel Rumor Revived: Jarmulovsky, Perhaps?

New York's restaurant blog Grub Street does a little Grade-A rumormongering today, passing along a whisper regarding Ian Schrager opening a W Hotel where Good World now serves up gravlax on the Lower East Side. Yowzers! A person at Good World has issued a denial, and let's not forget that Schrager already has a deal with Marriott, but we've dabbled in an Orchard Street W Hotel rumor before, and it's just so much fun to think about a gigantic W Hotel deep in the BelDel, no? Wait, don't answer that. And after that bit of SchragerMania comes an update on 54 Canal Street, aka the Jarmulovsky Bank Building (right), a Curbed favorite from way back. We've been waiting for this thing to go hotel for over two years now, and the Grub Streeters report that the building "was slated to be developed by Raber Enterprise, but an employee at Raber tells us it is no longer owned by them, and that it’s a strong possibility that the new developer (who that employee says is not Schrager but would not name) will claim the entire block." Hmm, could the Jarmulovsky Bank Building evolve into a Lower East Side W Hotel? Crazier things have happened. OK, they haven't.

Destructoporn Light: Harlem's Future W Hotel?

2007_7_harlemw1.jpg

The long-awaited Harlem hotel at Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 124th Street—on the site of the old Associated Supermarket—has been widely rumored to be headed for W Hotel status. Did that ever pan out? No really, somebody tell us, we have no idea. We do know, however, that demolition work has begun. A Curbed phototipster sent along some snappies of the grounds. On the left is the lot that so graciously gave up its air rights for the hotel, and that may become a two-story parking garage for the project. On the right is where the hotel will spring up. Harlem, can you feel the transient excitement?!?!

Really, can you? Two close-ups follow. >>

And on This Day, the Shvoplosion

2007_03_shvomega.jpg

Michael Shvo wants to be in your life. Like...so bad. If you doubted that 2007 is shaping up to be the Year of Shvo, or Shvyear in shorthand, just get a load of the two huge—freaking gigantic—projects he's working on right now. First up is 650 Sixth Avenue (top), first brought to our attention by Modern Art Obsession. A team-up with the Jack Shainman Gallery, the future condo building/art gallery hybrid already has a website, where the focus seems to be on white space and black people in bell-bottoms. More info TK in April, but we assume the six-story loft building currently on the 20th Street site is headed for conversion rather than complete annihilation.

Then there's the matter of 123 Washington Street downtown (bottom), but a hole in the ground right now, which the Observer's John Koblin reports will be the site of a W hotel-condo, a partnership of Shvo and the Moinian Group. The Moinian Group recently ditched its condo conversion plans at 60 Madison Avenue, probably because when you're working with Michael Shvo, he demands your attention—all of it. Let's Shvo™.
